Below is the official view of the antiviral effect by the Photocatalysis Industry Association of Japan (PIAJ).
“Photocatalyst antiviral effect official view
Recently, with the spread of new coronavirus infection, antivirus technology using photocatalyst has been attracting attention and many inquiries have been received.
Therefore, we would like to present the position of the Photocatalyst Industry Association of Japan as follows.
In the Photocatalysis Industry Association, "(photocatalytic) antivirus" refers to "a state in which the activity (infectivity) of a virus is suppressed on the surface of the photocatalyst."-The antiviral effect of the photocatalyst is an evaluation of the effect on the index bacteriophage Qβ (NBRC 20012), and although it can be expected to have an effect on all viruses, it does not guarantee the effect on all viruses or specific viruses.
-It does not indicate the preventive or curative effect of the disease.
-The antiviral effect of the photocatalyst is expressed on the surface of the photocatalyst, and has no direct effect on the space.
For people who would like to know more in detail, the following link and PDF introduces the basic knowledge of virus, and mechanism.”
"Photocatalytic antiviral mechanism
-The photocatalytic oxidative decomposition is expected to be effective regardless of the type of virus, because there is no selectivity for decomposition. It is considered that the effect of virus mutation is almost unaffected.
-It is generally said that viruses which does not have an envelope have high resistance to disinfectants, etc., but it has been confirmed that photocatalysts exhibit antiviral effects regardless of the exist or not an envelope.
-The antiviral action of the photocatalyst occurs only on the surface of the photocatalyst. The effect on the virus in the air can be expected to inactivate the virus that contacts the photocatalyst surface from the air."
